Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the divine incarnation of Lord Krishna, who appeared over 500 years ago in Navadvīpa, West Bengal (India). He is not only worshipped as a saint or reformer but as the Supreme Lord, Krishna Himself, who came with the mood and golden effulgence of, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, to teach the world pure love of God and the process of achieving it, chanting the holy name of the Lord.

In the well-known scripture Śrimad-Bhagavatam, Mahabharata, and especially the Caitanya Upanishad, His appearance is predicted. It is said that in the age of Kali-yuga, the Lord would appear not with weapons, but with the power of the holy name, to deliver the fallen souls.

With that purpose in mind, Caitanya Mahaprabhu introduced and spread the most purifying spiritual practice of sankīrtana-yajña — the congregational chanting of the holy names:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare HareHare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Through this simple but powerful method of chanting the Lord's holy name, He taught that anyone — regardless of caste, religion, gender, social or economic background — can achieve spiritual perfection and taste the bliss of bhakti (devotional service).

He did not establish a new religion but revived the essence of Sanātana Dharma: the congregational chanting of the Lord's holy name and loving devotional service to Lord Krishna with humility, compassion, and surrender.

His life and teachings are beautifully documented in texts like the Caitanya-caritamrita and Caitanya-bhagavata, where we learn about:

  • His early life as Nimai Pandita

  • His manifestation as a great devotee

  • His ecstatic kīrtanas in Navadvīpa and Puri

  • His pilgrimage in South India, preaching Krishna bhakti

  • His final years in Jagannatha Purī, lost in the intense mood of divine separation (vipralambha-bhava)

Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the most merciful incarnation of the Lord because He freely gives the highest spiritual gift — prema-bhakti, love of God — to one and all.
